Whether you prefer to refer to it as a blocked nose, stuffy nose, or nasal congestion, one thing is certain: it makes you uncomfortable, not to mention that it may even interfere with your productivity and sleep. So, how do you get rid of a blocked nose? This article will highlight some of the best home remedies for blocked nose which can help to clear the excess mucus and nasal swelling associated with nasal congestion. Included also are the top natural and homeopathic remedies for blocked nose.

What Causes A Blocked Nose?

blocked nose
There are many home remedies for blocked nose

Blocked nose is the result of blood vessel inflammation. The nose comprises of a huge network of blood vessels. Each of these blood vessels contain a series valves that open and close as necessary to allow blood into the nose.

According to Stringer, S., MD, professor of otolaryngology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, any factor that causes a stimulation of the nerves in the nose makes them open up, resulting in an increase flow of blood into the nose. This in turn causes swelling in the nasal passage, leading to nasal congestion.

The accumulation of mucus associated with common cold tend to make nasal congestion worse. Most home remedies for blocked nose aim at fighting off this mucus accumulation while soothing the inflamed blood vessels.

Among the most common causes of a blocked nose are:

  • Cold or flu.
  • Allergies: Exposure to allergens e.g. pet dander and pollen can cause persistent or constant blocked nose. Causes a blocked nose alongside symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes
  • Sinus infection
  • Excessive production of mucus

Home Remedies for Blocked Nose and Sinus

Over the counter medications the likes of nasal decongestants and antihistamines are typically used to clear blocked nose, but you can as well use simple home remedies to get rid of the condition and start breathing easier.

Among the best home remedies for blocked nose are:

A Humidifier for Blocked Nose

A humidifier
A humidifier is one of the best home remedies for blocked nose

Having a balanced amount of moisture in the air we breathe is important for optimum health. When the air around the house is too dry, the sinuses can become inflamed leading to nasal congestion.

A humidifier (or a vaporizer) is one of the best home remedies for blocked nose due to low moisture content especially at night. It pumps up moisture into the air which helps to thin out the mucus in your nose, thus relieving sinus and nasal congestion.

According to the HealthLine website, moist air also helps to soothe the inflamed blood vessels.

Both warm mist and cool mist humidifiers will work just fine, but the EverydayHealth website suggests using the cool-mist humidifier for children nasal congestion to avoid accidental burns. It is also of paramount importance that you keep the humidifier clean to avoid growth of harmful fungi and bacteria.

Each humidifier comes with usage and cleaning instruction; follow them to the letter.

Steam Treatment for Blocked Nose

Like the humidifier, inhaling steam also helps to relieve blocked nose by loosening the mucus in your and sinus and nasal passages.  It also helps to relieve blood vessel inflammation, making it one of the most effective home remedies for blocked nose.

Here is how to go about it:

  1. Heat some water in a small pot and then transfer it to a small basin. Drape a towel over your head while leaning over the steaming water. Inhale the steam deeply, being careful not to scald your face. Repeat several times each day and the blocked nose will soon get a relief. Adding a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils can make the remedy even more powerful.
  2. Alternatively, take a steamy shower and breathe in and out during the shower.

Nasal Irrigation with a Neti Pot

Nasal irrigation with a neti pot – a simple device shaped like a tea pot – can also help to drain your sinuses and offer instant relief from blocked nose. As one of the oldest home remedies for blocked nose, nasal irrigation has usage history extending back to centuries among Indian yoga and ayurvedic practitioners which makes it one of the oldest home remedies for blocked nose.

In addition to thinning out the mucus clogging your nose, a neti pot also helps to flush out any offending allergens in your nose.

The neti pot is designed to pass water through your nasal passages. Although you can use plain tap water, it is recommended that you use sterile (distilled) water to minimize the risk of infection. Saline water is also great for the purpose.

To use a neti pot, fill it with sterile water or saline solution prepared by mixing boiled water with salt (pharmaceutical grade salt is  highly recommended even though you can as well use common salt), then tilt your head sideways over a sink. Now insert the neti pot’s spout into your nostril and then pour the saline solution gently until it flows out through the other nostril. After a few minutes, repeat the process on the other nostril.

You can buy a neti pot in drugstores and health food stores.

Saline Sprays

As the name suggests, saline sprays constitute of a mixture of sterile water and salt and are available over the counter in most drugstores.

They can also help to get rid of blocked nose by thinning out the mucus in your nasal passages and soothing the inflamed blood vessels. Saline sprays can also help to flush out allergens and bacteria present in your nasal passages and sinuses. Since they also help to increase moisture in your nasal passages, saline sprays are particularly very helpful during winter when moisture levels are usually very low.

If you want you can create your own saline spray at home as follows:

  1. Pour 2-3 teaspoons of non-iodized salt into a bottle containing a pint of sterilized or distilled water. Boiled, then cooled, water will as well do. Swirl the bottle until all the salt has dissolved.
  2. Transfer the resulting solution into a bulb syringe
  3. Squirt the solution gently into your nose with the bulb syringe tiled slightly towards the back of your head (as opposed to straight up).

This home remedy is particularly good for blocked nose in infants and toddlers.

Caution: As high as the ranking of saline rinses is among home remedies for blocked nose, some of the OTC saline sprays contain decongestant medications. Follow the instructions for such sprays carefully as their over-use (for longer than 3 days) can actually make the blocked nose worsen.

Take Lots of Hydrating Fluids

Fluid intake is one of the easiest but most effective home remedies for blocked nose. Fluids (liquids) such as water, ginger ale, juice, soup, tea, and even sports drinks helps to your body hydrated which in turn helps to thin out the mucus in your nasal passages. Caffeinated drinks such as coffee are however not advisable when you are suffering from blocked nose as they may actually dehydrate your body and worsen the nasal congestion.

Warm Compress (or Hot Pack)

In the list of home remedies for blocked nose also is a warm compress. This simply refers to a warm cloth or pack that works the same way as steam or hot shower; by opening the nasal passages. Dr. Stringer says that there isn’t any evidence that a warm compress (and a cold compress too) relieves inflammation in the nose but is quick to point out that there is no reason why you shouldn’t use it if it makes you feel better.

To use this remedy to relieve congestion, follow these steps:

  1. Dip a small towel or washcloth in warm water.
  2. Wring the excess water out of the washcloth, then fold it and apply it across your face, especially at your nose bridge and forehead.
  3. Repeat the treatment as frequent as is necessary until the stuffy nose is healed.

Vitamin C for Blocked Nose

For blocked nose related to cold, vitamin C may be of help. According to Dr. Stringer, although vitamin C doesn’t relieve nasal congestion directly, studies have shown that it is effective in shortening the duration of a cold and relief of symptoms.

NB: Vitamin C won’t be of much help to blocked nose that is caused by allergies. Other home remedies for blocked nose such as saline spray and nasal irrigation with a neti pot would be better options for allergy induced nasal congestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar

A list of home remedies for blocked nose would certainly not be complete without including apple cider vinegar. The potassium in this home remedies superstar helps to open blocked b thinning out the mucus and the acetic acid in it inhibits the growth of bacteria in sinuses which is often a contributory factor for nose blockage.

To use apple cider vinegar to open a blocked nose¸ follow these steps:

  1. Pour a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of water. Mix the two and then sip the resulting solution. Repeat this process 2-3 times daily until you get relief from sinus or nasal blockage.
  2. Alternatively, get a cup of warm water, then add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar followed by 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix well, then sip it. Repeat 2-3 times daily to help open the blocked nose quickly.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil has strong anti-inflammatory and “mucus thinning” properties which makes it one of the best home remedies for blocked nose. It has also been shown to be potent in getting rid of several bacteria responsible for upper respiratory tract infections e.g. sinus infection. Here are some of the options available for this blocked nose remedy:

  1. Pour 2-3 drops of eucalyptus onto a clean handkerchief. Inhale the aroma deeply for about 5 minutes. Repeat the process a few times each day for the best results.
  2. To reap the benefits of eucalyptus essential oil while sleeping, you can also apply a few drops to your pillow.
  3. Alternatively, add 5 drops or so of eucalyptus oil into a small basin with boiling water (about 1 quart of water), then lean over the basin with a towel draped over your head. Inhale the steam coming out of the basin deeply for 10 minutes or so. Repeat the process a few times daily to open the blocked nose.

Home Made Vapor Rub for Blocked Nose

A blocked nose can benefit from the healing powers of eucalyptus oil when used in a homemade vapor as outlined below:

  1. To about an ounce of coconut oil add about 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil (wintergreen and mint essential oils will do just as fine).
  2. Apply the mixture to your chest and below the nose, then massage it in gently for instant relief from blocked nose.

Caution: Eucalyptus and mint essential oils SHOULD NOT be used for children aged below 10 and 6 years respectively. Instead, try using pine, cypress, fir, and spruce essential oils for children provide they are older than 2 years.

Massage the Nostrils

This is yet another one of those home remedies for blocked nose that look so simplistic that their effectiveness is easily overlooked. Don’t let the title “massage the nostrils” (for lack of better description) fool you; this remedy is very powerful.

  1. Place your index fingers on either sides of your nose, that is, at the edge of each nostril as shown in the image below courtesy of Readers Digest.

massage for blocked nose

The side-effects of this homeopathic remedy for nasal congestion are still not conclusively studied as at the time of this writing.

Arsenicum Album

Made from arsenic (of course in very small amount especially given that this element is very poisonous to humans), Arsenicum album is recommended for a blocked nose in patients who frequently suffer from colds, sore throats, and chest complication as the Blue Shield Complementary and Alternative Medicines says.

Patients whose symptoms get worse just before midnight are also candidates for prescription with Arsenicum album and so are patients that sneeze constantly as well as those who discharge thick, white-colored mucus.

Nux Vomica

Nux vomica is one of the best natural homeopathic remedies for blocked nose that occurs at night. It is also suited for treatment of nose blockage that affects only one side of the nose with the other nostril running freely (runny nose) as well as cases of blocked nose that get worse when the patient goes outside.

CAUTION: Consult with your doctor before using any of these homeopathic remedies for blocked nose, especially for babies.

Cure Blocked Nose after Swimming

blocked nose after swimmingWe have seen many home remedies for blocked nose so far but what about a blocked nose that develop after swimming in a pool, lake or ocean?

Well, this is usually attributed to irritation of the mucous membrane caused by the chemicals used to disinfect the pools, especially chlorine. You may as well get a blocked nose after swimming in a lake or ocean if water enters your nasal passages leading to sinus infection.

There are numerous ways in which you can prevent post-swimming nasal congestion including:

  • Try using another pool in your area if there is one. The chemical balance of the pool you use is probably not right.
  • Get a nose clip and use every time you take a dip in the swimming pool. Although it might feel awkward at first, it will help to stop water and chlorine from entering your nasal cavity.
  • Take a shower before and after using a swimming pool. This should be mandatory anyway.
  • If you use an indoor swimming pool, ensure it has proper ventilation to prevent buildup of chlorine fumes.
  • Drink plenty of clean water and other non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages and fluids.

Now, what can you do to get rid of a stuffy nose if it has already developed after swimming? Well, any of the home remedies for blocked nose will do just fine, but many people will swear to the effectiveness of nasal irrigation and saline sprays. If you are allergic to chlorine and other chemicals used for swimming pool sanitization, you may also want to take antihistamines before taking a dip.

If a blocked nose after swimming is accompanied by fever, go see a doctor.

When to See a Doctor for a Blocked Nose

All these home remedies for blocked nose will help relieve the condition and make breathing easier. If congestion lasts more than 7-10 days, you should seek medical attention. As Dr. Stringer puts it, viral infections such as common cold clear within 7 days or so. Nasal congestion that lasts longer than 10 days may be indicative of a bacterial infection which would necessitate treatment with antibiotics. You should seek medical attention right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: fever, shortness of breath, facial or tooth pain, nose bleeding, and wheezing.

Homemade Coconut Oil-Baking Soda Deodorant

Are there any effective and fast ways to get rid of scabies? Scabies, a highly contagious itchy skin condition caused by the itch mite sarcoptes scabiei, is transmitted through direct skin to skin contact. Treatment includes topical and oral scabicidal drugs which are only available with a doctor’s prescription. In this article are different ways you can use to get rid of scabies at home naturally fast and permanently on both humans and dogs.

How to Get Rid of Scabies Fast

Sarcoptes scabies are very tiny mites that are known to burrow into the human skin causing intense and persistent itching. Itching becomes stronger while one is asleep and is made worse by warmth. Scabies is a highly contagious condition that can be spread via skin to skin contact.

It can also be transmitted through sexual contact which is why it is sometimes considered a sexually transmitted disease- Note that not all cases are sexually transmitted. Persistent itching may predispose the skin to secondary infections.

Scabies affects people across all races, social classes and occurs worldwide. It is known to spread quick and easy in crowded conditions with frequent body contact. Scabies breakouts often occur in prisons, nursing homes and other extended care facilities.

Symptoms include skin rash, small red bumps and blisters that occur on specific areas of the body which include; finger webs, feet, elbows, ventral wrists, back, buttocks and external genitalia. In infants and the immunosuppressed, the infection may occur on the skin of the face and the scalp.

It may also be possible to see the tiny red marks that the mites make while burrowing into the skin. The burrows are usually linear making an almost neat line or four or more closely placed bites. This is the most diagnostic symptoms of the disease. It is important to note that even after treatment and successful eradication of the mites, symptoms may persist for several weeks.

While there are a number of treatments which can successfully eradicate the infection, treatment should also involve the entire household plus any other persons who have had recent prolonged contact with the infested individual.

According to the CDC, “both sexual and close personal contacts who have had direct prolonged skin to skin contact with the infested person within the preceding month should also be examined and treated”. This however does not mean that the infestation will be cleared forever. Special instructions and precautions have to be taken to prevent re-infestation like making sure all persons are treated at the same time. Other medications such as anti-inflammatory and antihistamines can be used to control itching.

Here is How to Get Rid of Scabies Fast

Products used in treatment of scabies are called scabicides. This is because they kill all stages of the scabies mites including eggs, hatchings and adult mites. These are however only available with a doctor’s prescription. While there are a number of over the counter medications touted to cure scabies, there is no proof that they offer any relief.

Permethrin to Get Rid of Resistant Scabies Permanently

This is so far the most effective treatment for scabies and is the recommended treatment of choice. It is an ointment and common household product that has been used effectively to eradicate scabies infestation

Permethrin Cream for Scabies
Permethrin Cream for Scabies
  1. Wash and dry the affected area before applying any medication
  2. Should be applied once in a day before bedtime on the neck downwards
  3. In infants, apply permethrin to the entire head and neck too
  4. Apply and coat the entire skin surface
  5. Leave it on for 8-14 hours
  6. Wash off in the morning
  7. Wear clean clothing after treatment

Permethrin is effective on all stages of the mites including the eggs, hatchings and adult mites and one application is normally sufficient. You may require several applications if treating crusted scabies. Permethrin may cause slight irritation of the skin which can be tolerated.

Oral Ivermectin Treats Crusted Scabies Effectively

Ivermectin is oral treatment that is very effective in treating severely crusted scabies in immunosuppressed persons where topical medications do not seem to work. It is cheap compared to other medications and is taken as a single dose but a repeat dose may be required in severely crusted scabies. One of the advantages of using ivermectin, is that it can be comfortably used to treat mentally ill patients where topical application may be difficult.

Note that while ivermectin has been used successfully to treat parasitic infections, in the US, the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of scabies. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.

How to Cure Scabies Using Sulfur Creams, Ointments and Powder

Sulfur has long been in use for treatment of various skin problems. It is one of the most common remedies used at home for the treatment of scabies as it is very effective in getting rid of the scabies mites. A study done on the National Institute of Health on treatment of scabies using 8% and 10% topical sulfur ointment showed that using sulfur ointment in three successive days using two different regimens did not show any difference in effectiveness but rather with fewer side effects.

Sulfur is available in forms of ointments, creams, lotions, soaps and powder. Before application of any sulfur preparations on your skin:

  1. Wash the affected area with soap and water and dry it completely
  2. Apply the medicine making sure to cover all parts of the affected skin while rubbing in gently
  3. Apply sulfur preparations at bedtime covering your body from the neck downwards and leave it on for 24 hours
  4. After 24 hours, before the next application, wash your body thoroughly

If you are using sulfur soap to get rid of scabies

Work up a rich lather using warm water and wash the affected area and rinse thoroughly. Apply again while rubbing in gently for a few minutes. Remove the excess lather with a soft towel without rinsing off.

Note that some people are allergic to sulfur and any of its compounds and should not use this as a remedy for scabies without doctor’s consultation. Consult your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any skin irritation or rash that was not there before the use of sulfur.

Here is a video showing the appearance of scabies on different parts of the body; hands, legs and chest.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Scabies on Humans

Fast and prompt treatment is most important as it reduces the symptoms and prevents spreading through direct physical contact. While there are many home remedies to get rid of scabies, most of them cannot work on their own. It is recommended that you use them to reduce the intensity if symptoms while you await treatment with oral or topical scabicides. Where possible, you can also use home remedies in combination with scabicides to get rid of scabies. Here are how to get rid of scabies with household products

Apple Cider Vinegar to Get Rid of Scabies

Vinegar is known to have a high PH which when used on the skin causes the mites to die.

  1. In a bowl, mix equal parts of water and vinegar
  2. Use a cotton ball to apply the solution on the affected skin
  3. Leave it on the skin for a 15 minutes then rinse off with warm water
  4. Do this up to three times in a day to get rid of the infestation completely

Tea Tree Oil for Scabies

Tea tree oil is an age old disinfectant and antiseptic that has been used against all types of skin problems. Terpinen-4, a compound found in tea tree oil helps to kill scarptes scabiei. Here is how to use tea tree oil to get rid of mites and cure scabies rash

  1. Apply 5% tea tree oil on affected area of the skin twice a day. Do this for atleast 10 days for best results.
  2. If you have sensitive skin, add TTO in bath water or to your laundry wash while doing your linen and clothes.
  3. Alternatively, mix a tablespoon each of tea tree oil and olive oil. Use a cotton ball to apply the solution to the affected are twice daily for two weeks.

Note that, tea tree oil is effective against unprotected and vulnerable scabies mites. It does not work on those mites that are deeply burrowed into the skin. It is also does not kill scabies eggs. If you are looking for where to buy TTO, it is readily found in local food stores. While going through most reviews online, most users rate TTO for scabies lowly for complete cure but recommend it for relief against the scabies itch and rash.

How to Get Rid of Scabies with Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is best used on skin that is not sensitive as it is very hot and can be very aggressive on eradication of the scabies mites. Cayenne will burn the mites without having any adverse effects on your skin.

  1. Add a cup of cayenne pepper in hot bath water
  2. Soak in the bath water until the water cools down
  3. Rinse off with cool water
  4. Be careful not to get any cayenne into your eyes
  5. Do this once daily until the scabies is eradicated

Soaking your skin in a hot bath with cayenne pepper will help to get rid of scabies on the trunk, hands and legs. Make sure that the water is not too hot. Hot water may dry up your skin causing more irritation.

How to Get Rid of Scabies Naturally

Taking hot showers might make scabies itch even worse. This is because hot water makes the skin dry our fast which causes irritation and exacerbates the itch. It is recommended that you wash in cold water to sooth your skin and calm the itching.  You may start off with slightly warm water then gradually decrease the temperature to a tolerable low. This means that you will start off with warm water and end with cold water to provide a cooling effect on the skin.

Be sure to use soaps that do not dry out your skin and make the scabies itch and rash worse. Soap with ingredients that can cause skin irritation such as often inflame the skin. It is best to avoid such soaps and use those that have ingredients which are calming to the skin.

If you are not using any conventional medication or home remedies to get rid of scabies, you can buy soothing lotion to calm the itch and provide relief from symptoms of inflammation. Consult your doctor or pharmacist on what lotion or cream is best to sooth scabies itch.

Take antihistamines. The body produces histamines in response to allergens. The scabies itch is caused by the body’s allergic reaction to the mites and their eggs. Taking sedating antihistamines will help you sleep and temporarily relieve itching. Take antihistamines before bed time and avoid driving or operating any machinery since they cause drowsiness. Note that non-sedating antihistamines do not relieve itching.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated. The skin is itchier when dry. People have different water requirements. Just drink enough. Pair this up with a healthy diet avoiding foods that have natural histamines such red wine, citrus fruits, seafood, eggs and spices.

Wear clothes that do not stimulate itching. Some materials may make your skin more sensitive than others. Avoid new and tight clothes and clothing materials such as latex, wool. Wear loose clothing in cotton, silk, linen and dye free.

How to Get Rid of Scabies in the House

There are many treatments that are effective in getting rid of scabies on humans. Cleaning around the house furniture, clothing and floors is also very important to help prevent re-infestation after treatment. This is a very vital step. The scabies mite can live for 2-3 days off the human body and cleaning makes sure that the mites do not get a safe haven while you are on treatment.

How to Get Rid of Scabies on Furniture and Carpets

According to greendept.com, furniture and carpets are not infective with normal early scabies as they rarely carry the scabies mites or eggs- scabies do not survive more than 3 days away from the human skin. They therefore do not require any kind of treatment but it does not hurt to take precaution.

Furniture and carpets are only infected in case of crusted scabies which is very rare and should only be treated at the hospital. It is not necessary to go praying insecticide on clothes and furniture.

Vacuum Carpets and Floors to Remove Scabies Mites
Vacuum Carpets and Floors to Remove Scabies Mites

Vacuum on upholstery and carpets and throw away the bad or empty the canister. Wash the removable canister in hot soapy water and allow it to dry in the sun. Steam clean your carpets and allow them to air dry. Use bleach to mop the floors where possible.

Clothes, bedding and towels should be machine washed in hot water or dry cleaned using the hot cycle. After washing, dry everything in the hot dryer using the hot setting.

If you are not able to machine wash or dry clean, seal the clothing in a plastic bag the moment you remove them for at least 72hours. Removing them from the body and cutting off any contact for at least 72 hours will decontaminate them

How to get rid of scabies from your bed and mattress

It is possible that some scabies mites might lodge onto your bed and mattress for a while. This however should not make you throw away your mattress. The best way to kill the scabies mites is by getting a plastic mattress cover for your mattress. To get rid of scabies from your bed, wash with hot soapy water and follow this up by spraying with 5% permethrin and allow it to air dry. Do the same with car seats and other wooden furniture.

Note: DO NOT spray permethrin around cats- it is toxic to them.

Also referred to as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a chronic condition in which areas of itchy, scaly red rash develops on the face, scalp, hands, elbows (the inside area), knees, ankles, and sometimes feet. It is characterized by intensely itching patches of scaly skin which gets worse when scratched (or even get infected), culminating in a kind of a vicious-cycle. Some cases may also result in oozing blisters that later dry and crust over. On a good note though, there are many home remedies for eczema itching and dryness that have been to offer relief.

Causes of Eczema

Exposure to certain substances e.g. soaps, detergents, dust mites, metals, animal dander etc. can trigger eczema and dry weather or climate, temperature changes, stress, and prolonged exposure to water (especially hot water) have been shown to make the condition more serious. For some people, eczema occur even without exposure to any known allergen.

Eczema in babies
Eczema can affect babies and adults alike

Eczema results when exposure to the above substances trigger a reaction in the body immune system similar to that which causes allergies.

It is more common in infants and children but may as well affect adults. People with family history of eczema and allergic conditions the likes of hay fever and asthma are genetically predisposed to the condition.

Although difficult to resist the urge, scratching the skin only makes the condition worse and may increases the risk of secondary infection as well as scarring (formation of eczema scars).

Is Eczema Curable?

The question arises, Can eczema be cured? Well, according to the US National Eczema Association, eczema is not yet fully understood and no cure is known to fully get rid of the condition but the conventional treatments incorporating at-home self-care measures and prescription medications where necessary helps to alleviate the symptoms in most patients.

Best Home remedies for eczema

From chronic itchy minor eczema rashes to severe eczema breakouts with oozing blisters, there is hope. Simple home intervention measures can help to get rid of the symptoms and treat the condition.

And as you will soon find out, most rely on simple, cost-effective ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry or can acquire readily at your local convenience store, health food store, or drugstore.

The following are some of the best home remedies for eczema that have been found to help the itching, dryness, and inflammation associated with the condition:

Magnesium Baths and Oral Magnesium Intake

The itchy, dry, and scaly skin that is typical of eczema may be relieved adequately hydrating it. This would entail having a bath frequently to allow moisture to soak into the skin, followed by moisturizing with a good moisturizer. On the downside, however, soaking in water only makes the condition worse for some people. That is where magnesium baths come in handy for eczema sufferers.

To use this home remedy for eczema, simply add a cup of magnesium flakes to your bath water. According to an article published in the Wellness Mama website also, adding a couple tablespoons or so of Himalayan salt could also help to get rid of eczema symptoms.

Oral Intake of Magnesium for Eczema

In addition to magnesium baths, taking magnesium oil orally can also help to treat eczema. As a matter of fact, taking a combination of topical and oral treatment with magnesium (flakes and oil) is likely to get things going faster.

Bleach Bath

According to the Mayo Clinic, a dilute-bleach bath also comes in handy in treating eczema at home. It helps to reduce the amount of bacteria on the skin and thus curb infections.

Here is how to use bleach baths for skin healing:

  1. Fill a bath tub with warm water. For this home remedy for eczema, we are assuming you have the standard 40 gallon (151 liter bath tub); if not, adjust the ingredients proportions accordingly.
  2. Pour in ½ cup of household bleach into the water.
  3. Soak in the water for 10 minutes from the neck down (keep your head above water).
  4. After ten minutes, hop into the shower to rinse your skin, then pat it dry before applying your favorite moisturizer.
  5. Repeat 2 to 3 times each week, and no more than that.

Apply Anti-Itch Cream or Lotion

You can also use over-the-counter anti-itch creams to get rid of eczema itching. A 1% hydrocortisone cream is recommended for this purpose but keep in mind the relief it offers is only temporary.

Simply apply it to the affected area of skin before applying your regular moisturizer. Once the itching has significantly been reduced you may then reduce the frequency of use to avoid flare-ups.

Other than prescription creams, you may as well use to calamine lotion to reduce the itching associated with eczema.

Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize Some More

Regular moisturizing with a good quality moisturizer also ranks among the best home remedies for eczema outbreak on the face, hands and any other part of the skin. Ideally, you should moisturize your skin not less than 2 times each day.

For best results, the Mayo Clinic suggests applying your moisturizer on your skin immediately after getting out of a shower or bath. This helps to retain the moisture inside the skin. You will in particular want to ensure that your hands, arms, back, the sides of your body, and the legs are well tended to.

Baking soda

The healing properties of baking soda, thanks to its pH balancing and mild anti-inflammation action, also makes it handy for the healing of eczema.

How to use baking soda for eczema home treatment:

  1. To warm bathing water, sprinkle a tablespoon or two of baking soda
  2. Soak in the water for 10-15 minutes
  3. Pat your skin dry and finish off by moisturizing it. If you want, you may apply a medicated cream or lotion first before applying the moisturizer.

More Tips for Effective Home Treatment of Eczema

We have looked at some of the best home remedies for eczema but your home treatment regime should not just stop there. Below are some simple but effective measures that will help you treat eczema itching and inflammation more effectively at home:

  • Avoid scratching the affected area: With eczema, the urge to scratch your face, hands etc. is real but that will not only make the condition worse but also increase risk of secondary infections and scars formation. You will find keeping your nails short and wearing gloves handy at night.
  • Apply cool compresses: Cool, wet compresses (that is washcloths dipped in water) and bandages also helps to not only relief the itching and inflammation but also keep the affected area protected.
  • Opt for mild soaps: Harsh soaps, especially those with perfumes and dyes, are often irritating to the skin and should be a no-no for anyone suffering from eczema. Instead, go for gentle soaps such as dove and even then, ensure that you rinse your skin completely after using the soap.
  • Get a humidifier: Hot and dry air indoors can worsen the itching and make the skin even more inflamed and flaky. A humidifier can help to add moisture into your living environment and prevent this dry or hot-air effect.
  • Choose appropriate clothing: Some rough fabrics such as wool may further irritate the eczema-affected skin and make the condition worse. Instead, choose clothes that are made of cool, smooth textured fabrics such as silk and cotton. Check also that your clothes are not too tight-fitting or “sweat-inducing” epically in hot weather.
  • Manage stress: stress and anxiety can make eczema worse. Acknowledge stress and any other emotional disorder and seek ways to manage it. You may find stress-fighting exercises such as taking a deep breath, yoga, and meditation among others helpful, but if necessary, seek professional help.

Natural Remedies for Eczema

For those who prefer natural remedies, below are a few considerations you may want to work with:

Coconut Oil for Eczema Treatment

Coconut oil is simple one amazing ingredient with a great array of beneficial uses at home ranging from skin care to hair and teeth care among others.

What you perhaps didn’t know is that coconut oil is as well a great natural remedy for eczema and will aid in getting rid of the itch and mild pain caused by the condition if applied topically to the skin. That is assuming that you are not allergic or intolerant to the oil.

Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids and has antibacterial properties and it is claimed that it is absorbed readily into the skin where it fills the intercellular spaces that allow moisture loss leading to that chronic dryness that is typical of eczema. And because it is very gently, it is arguably among the best natural remedies for baby eczema and adult eczema alike.

It can also be used internally for the purpose.

Below is a guideline on how to use coconut oil as a natural eczema remedy:

  • Pour a little coconut oil into the palm of your hands and rub it well until it is well spread in your palms. Apply a thin layer of the oil on the affected areas of your face, hands, etc. Repeat 2 to 3 times daily until you achieved the desired results. Coconut lotion bars are also great and are particularly well suited for those with coconut oil sensitivity.

You will also want to consider:

  • Use extra virgin coconut oil for cooking purposes instead of the regular cooking oil. This will not only aid in the healing of eczema but also get you into the path of healthy eating.

Jojoba Oil

You cannot talk about natural cures for eczema and single out jojoba oil. This waxy substance is rich in fatty acids and fatty alcohols which makes it greatly nourishing and moisturizing to the skin.

It is claimed that the structure of jojoba oil is the one closest to that of sebum (the skin oil that helps to keep it hydrated) and because it is easily and deeply absorbed into the skin into the skin, it gets to work pretty quickly.

Here is how to use jojoba oil to treat eczema naturally:

  1. Pour some jojoba oil into the clean palms of your hands.
  2. Apply a thin film to the eczema inflicted areas of the skin and massage it gently as the oil gets absorbed.
  3. Repeat the process 3 times each day and that eczema itch and inflammation will soon be relieved.

Honey

Honey is another amazing natural eczema treatment and some people will swear to its effectiveness.  To start with, honey has mild anti-inflammatory properties which helps to reduce the inflammation that usually accompany eczema. Secondly, it has natural antimicrobial properties which curbs and prevents secondary infections.

Couple all this with its humectant properties (ability to draw water to the areas of the skin where it is applied) and you have the making for a great natural remedy for eczema.  Organic honey or manuka honey is particularly good for the purpose.

Of concern however is the tendency for honey to make the skin fell sticky. To overcome this limitation, simply apply it to the affected areas of the skin as opposed to all over the legs, arms, face name it.

  1. Ensure that your hands are clean.
  2. Pour a small amount of honey into the palm of your hands and then slather a thin film over the affected area of your face, hands, arms, etc.
  3. Allow it 20-30 minutes to work in and then wash it off with cool water.
  4. Repeat the process 3 times per day and that irritating eczema will clear soon be “cured” so to speak.

Shea Butter

Eczema is most notable for its dry, scaly patches which often gets itchy and shea butter comes in handy in healing these symptoms. It has an abundance of non-saponifiable fatty acids – meaning that they cannot be converted to soap – which help to not only repair damaged skin cells but also curb the inflammation associated with eczema.

To make it even more effective, you will want to consider a combination natural treatment that adds in jojoba oil, coconut oil, and beeswax. In this case, beeswax is used simply as a thickening medium but is also serves a purpose in softening and protecting the skin.

Ingredients needed:

  • 1 tablespoon shea butter
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil

Directions:

  1. To a small pot, add the beeswax and jojoba oil.
  2. Heat them gently until they melt, then pour in the coconut oil.
  3. Continue heating gently while stirring until the ingredients blend smoothly.
  4. Lower the heat and pour in the shea butter. Continue stirring over gentle heat until the shea butter has melted and blended in with the rest of the ingredients.
  5. Now transfer the mixture into an air-tight container or jar and allow it time to cool before applying it over the affected areas of the face or skin.
  6. Apply the mixture 1-2 times daily until you have achieved the desired results.

Oatmeal

oatmealAn oatmeal bath also goes a long way in moisturizing the skin and will offer natural relief to eczema inflicted skin. Oatmeal bath also does wonders to the itching associated with eczema but that is not all; oatmeal also contains anti-inflammatory properties which help to soothe the skin.

Below is a guideline on how to use oatmeal to heal eczema naturally:

  1. Pour a cup of oatmeal into a muslin or cheesecloth and then tie the top part.
  2. Now fill a bath halfway with water and then tie the oatmeal containing muslin or cheesecloth to the tip of the faucet before opening it to allow water to flow past the oatmeal. Continue until the bath tub is full. At that point, the water will appear milky. If you want, you can also squeeze the bag to increase the efficacy of the water in the bath tub.
  3. Relax in the bathtub for 10 to 15 minutes and then get out.
  4. Do not rinse your skin. Instead, pat it dry with a clean towel and then apply a moisturizer.
  5. Repeat the process 1 to 2 times daily as needed.

Tip: Finely grounded oatmeal such as Aveeno will as well work fine if you don’t have or don’t want to use oatmeal in its natural form.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Eczema

Some people will also vouch to the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar for eczema natural treatment. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory which may help to soothe the skin. Using apple cider vinegar for this remedial purpose is as easy as adding it to bath water as explained below:

  1. Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath tub of lukewarm water – not hot water as it may further irritate your skin.
  2. Soak in the water for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Finally pat your skin dry and apply a moisturizer.
  4. Repeat frequently as needed, say twice a day, and the symptoms will clear in a short while.

Vitamins for Eczema

Several vitamins have been linked to effective treatment of eczema. Of these, vitamin D comes out strongly. Vitamin D supplementation is increasingly being touted to help relief eczema symptoms.

Topical application of vitamin E has also been touted to help treat eczema symptoms. Simply pop a vitamin E capsule on the affected area of the face or skin once or twice daily.

Herbal remedies for eczema

As you can see, the list of eczema natural cures is pretty big. But it doesn’t end there yet. There are many herbal remedies that can as well be used to treat eczema naturally at home including:

Turmeric

Turmeric has been found to be an effective herbal treatment for eczema. This is attributed to the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, which has been shown to have mild anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. And the best part, using turmeric is pretty easy; simply make a paste by mixing turmeric with water and then apply it to the affected areas of the skin.

Chamomile Tea

chamomile tea
chamomile tea

Chamomile tea contains a substance known as a-bisabolol. This is a beneficial natural alcohol which helps to heal and soothe inflamed skin. This coupled with its natural antimicrobial properties makes for a great herbal cure for eczema.

It has also been shown to be effective at reducing itchiness. Here is how to use chamomile tea as a remedy for eczema:

  1. Pour 4 tablespoons of dried chamomile into a muslin or cheesecloth.
  2. Tie the muslin or cheesecloth to the faucet on a half-full bathtub and then allow water to run through it until the bathtub gets filled. After that you can squeeze it or even drop it into the bath.
  3. Soak yourself in the bathtub for 15 minutes or so and then pat your skin dry
  4. Finally apply moisturizer
  5. Repeat the process two times daily and those symptoms of eczema will soon fade away.

Alternatively:

Brew a pot of chamomile tea by steeping fresh dried chamomile leaves for 15 minutes. With the help of a cotton wool or sterile gauze, apple the tea to the areas of the skin affected by eczema. Rinse it off after 20 minutes or so. Repeat twice daily for the best results.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera also makes for a great herbal cure for eczema, so to speak, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, soothing and skin healing properties.

  1. Get a fresh aloe vera lead and squeeze its juice onto the eczema-affected area of the skin.
  2. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse it off with cool water
  3. Repeat the process frequently until you have achieved the desired results.

As you can see, there are way too many home remedies for eczema itch and dryness and you should not suffer or have to always go for over the counter antihistamines and other medications to relieve the symptoms.
